The surrounding area - culture, history and monuments of nature

Walkenried and 5 miles radius : Romanesque-Gothic Cistercian monastery buildings with abbey ruins (just become part of the Cultural World Heritage), The Cloister Concerts with renowned artists and orchestras and outstanding museum of monastery life and economy, former border – now a footpath -, local heritage museum and glassworks museum, level and hilly footpaths through beech and oak forests, meadows and fields or on prehistoric chalk cliffs with lakes to look upon, fishing in ponds that where laid out 900 years ago by the Cistercian monks.

Day trips by car: various castles and castle ruins, medieval towns, mining museums in the “Ober-Harz”, Cultural World Heritage Sites like the “Goslar Mining Museum and Water System” nearby, various caves, National Park with our highest mountain “Brocken”(1140m) which can also be reached by steam train, water reservoirs and tumbling rivers, even a real canyon, art galleries in Goslar and a special museum with an endless panorama of the “Farmers’ War” in Bad Frankenhausen.

From Walkenried’s station you can easily reach Erfurt or Weimar by train, or you change at Nordhausen to the steam train which drives through the lovely mountain scenery up to the Brocken. In some areas there is also a “Hikers’ Bus”, which takes you (back) to the start.
